Las Vegas'’ World Series Main Event Poker Tournament now has nine players left from the 8,700 hopefuls eager to win the poker’’s biggest prize money of $12 million. The nine remaining players are the four professional poker players, a former talent agent, an ad salesman, a former talent agent, a retired businessman and a recent college graduate.
Fred Goldberg, 30 years old, a general contractor from Hollywood, Fla, put in all his $2.8 million in chips. He hoped that no other player had good cards in their hands. The pot holds about 440,000 chips.
But Goldberg'’ luck run out because Richard Lee, the businessman from San Antonio, had pocket kings in his hand. Lee said, “I wasn'’t happy going to be the final table without chips.” Goldberg response to his fate, “I got very unlucky.”
At Goldberg’’s hand was queen and three but that didn'’t help him get a seat at the final poker table. It sent him home.
The last standing players shook hands and congratulated each other because they made it to the final poker stage. They have survived the bloody elimination round where they faced good poker players. Those are as equally good as the final nine in the poker table.
Douglas Kim, the recent graduate from Duke University, age 22, had thrown away $3,000 on satellite tournaments online. Kim said, “I just can'’t believe it right now.”
Dan Nassif, 33 years old, from St. Louis and a newspaper ad salesman, has made it to the final round also and this is his second entry on the World Series event in two consecutive years.
He said, “I'’m living my dream. My boss even text me messaged me, wanting to know if I was quitting. I told him not to worry, that I wasn'’t going to.”
Lee, 55-years-old has been forced by his wife to exit the house after he retired from operating a business in the past eight years. He went back to poker instead. He learned poker when he was still 14, since his father had hosted games in their home.
Lee said, “My father would be smiling on me right now.”
The other player who made it to the final poker table is Rhett Butler, 45, he is an agent of insurance from Rockville, Md. Butler is married and had children. He said, “My buddies put up half the money. They'’re here rooting me on.”
Jamie Gold was the chip leader with 25.6 million; he is a four-time World Series bracelet winner. Seconded him was Allen Cunningham with 17.8 million and the third on the position is Lee with 11.8 million.
The fourth would be Erik Friberg from Sweden, with 9.6 million; the fifth position goes to Paul Wasicka, who is an Internet player with 8 million. And Kim landed on the sixth place with 6.8 million. Butler made it through in the seventh position with 4.8 million. Nassif is on the last position with the smallest stack of 2.6 million.
